Fast and frugal projects are my favorite! This week, I upcycled a popcorn bucket into a stylish herb garden using only materials I already had on hand. Win!
Each year, we buy a refillable popcorn bucket at the movies. Once we own it, refills are only $3 AND the theater emails coupons to get a free large drink when you buy popcorn almost every week. That means we get a large drink AND popcorn for $3. Unheard of! They do make us buy a new bucket each year, so instead of tossing our 2013 version, I got crafty.
I started with this:
First step was painting the bucket. I already had a can of black Rust-Oleum Textured spray paint in the garage. Using the textured paint gave my glossy bucket more of a clay pot look. You can also drill holes in the bottom at this point to help with drainage.
If you follow me on Instagram, you know I keep finding amazing deals on beautiful ribbon. I went through my stash and picked out a fun black and burlap roll from Hobby Lobby. It was only $1.50 when I bought it – such a steal! I cut the ribbon to go in a band around the pot and applied Super Glue gel in a zig zag pattern.
After playing with different patterns, I settled on two rows of ribbon at the top and two rows at the bottom.
This ribbon pattern leaves plenty of room for a cute label in the middle. I used vinyl letters, but a metallic paint pen would also be a great look.
Last step is planting your favorite herbs! We love Mexican food and fresh pico de gallo, so I’m going to use mine for cilantro as soon as it is warm enough. For now, I added some parsley.
And here is a close up!
I am totally in love with the way my new herb garden looks on the kitchen table. I can’t believe it came together with materials I already had in the house. If you like upcycle crafts, be sure to check out my Valentine Centerpiece made from random bottles that were headed for the recycling bin.
