Yay! It’s May which just so happens to be my all time favorite month of the year! For several reasons I love this month, but one of them is that it means summer, boating, lakes, and warmer weather are just around the corner (I’m up here in Minnesota and we can have some brutal winters).
To celebrate the fact that boating season will soon be upon us, today I’m sharing a quick and easy way to take a regular picture frame and add some nautical, summer inspired flair to it.
Simple, cute … and so easy! Adds a little interest to a plain frame, huh?
SUPPLIES
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Picture Frame (I found this one at Home Goods just recently)
- Rope (I just purchased this at Michael’s for 50% off, but you could also just pick up rope at your local hardware store).
- Dock Cleat with screws to fit (also sometimes called a marine cleat or boat cleat and can also be found at a hardware store).
- Staple Gun & staples
PROCESS
And here are the simple steps:
- Cut four pieces of rope long enough to reach from the top of your frame to the bottom and around to the back.
- Wrap each piece of rope around frame as shown:
- Secure each piece of rope at the top and bottom of the back of your frame with a staple:
- Next, cut another length of rope and loop it through the dock cleat as shown (or however you tie your knots):
- Take each end and secure onto the top back corners of your frame:
- Secure to the wall with your screws into the dock cleat and add a picture! That’s it!
It looks like summer …. and that makes me very happy! Can you see me over here smiling??
I love the detail of the boat/dock/marine cleat! So much more interesting than just a nail, right?!?
This would also be an adorable gift for someone with a cabin, someone with a beach home, or someone who is just lucky enough to live on the water!
Thanks for having me this month! I’ll see you here next month with another crafty idea, but until then I’d love for you to stop by and say ‘Hi’ at View From The Fridge!

Oh my gosh, that is ADORABLE. I have a beach-themed master bathroom and that would be perfect in there!!!! I must make this! I have an empty spot on the wall for it!
