DIY Valentine’s Day Arrow Decor

I’m so excited to be sharing this fun project with you this week, as one of the contributors to My Crafty Spot blog. This project was inspired by one of my recent trips to a thrift store, where I found a really cool (and slightly odd) item that looked like an arrow that had been shot through a cube. For Valentine’s Day this year, I decided to recreate it, using fun and vibrant colors.

I like to push the envelope when it comes to traditions, and I often see holidays as a time when I can break from the norm and showcase something new and cool in a non-traditional way. When I decided to make this vignette, I chose to go with bright and vibrant colors that aren’t typically associated with Valentine’s Day. I’m loving how it turned out.

Here is the full tutorial:

The total cost of this entire vignette was under $11.00 (which I LOVE, btw).

Here are the items needed for this project:

  • 2 canvas’ from the Dollar Store in different sizes (total cost: $5.50)
  • Craft feathers from the Dollar Store (total cost: $1.25)
  • Pack of 6 wooden dowels from the Dollar Store (total cost: $1.25)
  • Fast drying clay from the Dollar Store (total cost: $1.25)
  • Miniature canvas and easel from the Dollar Store ($1.25) – Not required; it’s just plain cute
  • If you’re a crafter, you’ll likely have the following items on hand:
  • Craft paint in colors of your choosing
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors
  • Wood glue
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Glue gun
  • Jute twine

I started off by painting both my canvas’ and wooden dowels in an off white tone.

I started painting some arrows using different colors that complement one another. At this point in the project, I thought to myself “self…. you really suck at art!!! Your arrows look ridiculous!” I nearly abandon the art part of this vignette, but since I had some left over white paint on hand, I figured I could clean up my arrows with a thin brush.

I cleaned up the edges and thinned out the arrows with the white paint, and while you can see it wet in this pic, it dried seamlessly, and no one ever has to know what a terrible artist I am. Lol.

Since I typically have a project (or two…or three….) on the go, I always have some scrap wood lying around. I used my miter saw and cut my cubes from the scrap wood.

I then painted my cubes in coordinating colors.

I found these awesome craft feathers at the dollar store and I fell in love. They were the exact colors I was looking for to add the fletching to my arrows.

I completed three different types of feathered fletching on the arrows (I totally free-styled it, and didn’t actually have a clue what I was doing…lol). I basically cut them to the shape I wanted and then used my hot glue gun to secure the feathers in place. Next, I wrapped some jute twine along the base of the feathers. The end of the jute twine was then secured with some hot glue.

Here’s where things got COMPLICATED!!!! I figured that it wouldn’t be a problem to drill a hole through my cube, so that I could thread my arrow through it. No dice… the wood was SOLID. It would’ve taken 2 years to drill through it, so on to Plan B. I set my miter saw at a slight bevel (because I wanted the arrow to appear it had gone through the cube on an angle), and cut out the middle section, which left me with “ends” that would stick out of the cube. Once I had my two pieces, I drilled a shallow hole in both sides of the cube on an angle, and secured each piece in place with some wood glue.

For my arrowheads, I used some quick-drying clay, which I formed into little arrowheads in varying size and shape.

Once my arrows were finished and “stuck” through the cubes, I had the idea to raise them up and showcase them. I went back to my scrap wood pile and cut a piece to the size I wanted. I then drilled three shallow holes for my leftover wooden dowels to fit and secured them into place on the base with some wood glue. I then painted the entire base the same off white color to match. I also painted the arrow heads as well, since the clay had hardened overnight.

To secure the cubes in place on the ends of the dowels, I drilled another shallow hole in the base of the cube. This was then secured in place with wood glue.

Here they are all finished. I love how well these turned out, and think they are perfect for Valentine’s Day décor, or perhaps would even work as nursery décor.
