DIY Stenciled Doormat

Hello again My Crafty friends! It’s Kayla back from Home Coming here to share my latest DIY project.

We’re slowly in the process of giving our front porch a makeover, and a cute, new doormat is one of those projects that’s simple to cross off my list – much easier than Replace the Front Door & Trim or Build Adirondack Chairs!

This was a pretty simple project, but it did take me a good few hours to complete since I opted for paint and a paintbrush vs. spray paint.

Materials:

  • Outdoor, waterproof paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Stencil
  • Exacto Knife
  • Rug

I bought my rug from Home Depot for under $10, and used some blue acrylic paint that I had in my painting arsenal since it’s both permanent and waterproof.

Then I printed out my words on 11×17 paper at work (Pacifico Font) which I carefully cut out using an exacto knife.

Then it was time to get painting. At this point, if you’d like to use spray paint, I’m sure you could. I opted not to in fear that my stencil may move and my words wouldn’t be as clear as I’d hoped.

And happily, the words turned out beautifully.

A little over an hour later (I was using a fairly small brush) I had the entire mat painted. It takes a REAL long time for the paint to dry, so the paint seems a little splotchy in the photos. I’m excited to take a looksie come morning to see how evenly it’s dried, and to see if I need to touch it up at all.

Keep in mind that we’re completely changing the look of this front patio over time, replacing the maroon door with a wood one, updating the trim and adding a little sitting area outside – and dark blue will be one of our accent colors. So while the blue doormat seems a little strange right now, it’ll fit in wonderfully in the next year.

So what do you think? Cute, right?

  1. This is adorable!! So easy, too, I wouldn’t have guessed! We’re in need of a new door mat as well, I think I’ll have to try this! I’m visiting from Thursday style link party. 🙂
