DIY Stamped Tea Towels

diy stamped tea towels with lemon
An easy way to brighten your kitchen is with custom made tea towels. This project is rather inexpensive and super easy to do.
To make your own tea towels, you will need:
  • -tea towels (washed and ironed)
  • -paint for fabric
  • -fabric medium
  • -paint brushes
  • -iron
I found almost all of my supplies at Joann’s Fabric and Craft Stores. I choose Martha Stewart’s paints because I really like her color selection.
A little important tip: be sure and purchase the fabric medium, it will help keep the paint soft and washable.

The rubber stamps I purchased were all 40% off— score! Love when that happens. 🙂 I found my four flour sack towels at Joann’s as well.

First step is to mix your paints.
mix paints with medium
If you want to mix different colors, do that first, then add your fabric medium. I mixed about one part medium to one part paint.
stamp on the tea towel
I used my paint brush to spread the paint thin and then gently pressed my stamp into the paint, making sure to check that the paint was on evenly. After that, I simply applied the stamp to my tea towel.  (You may notice that I didn’t pre-wash and iron my towels. I guess I got a little anxious to start this project!)
add a little detail to the tea towelI used a smaller, different pattern to add some interest to my towels.
Love that little dragonfly! 🙂
add a fun borderI decided for my other towels I would do a fun border at the bottom alternating between the grey and yellow.

Once I was finished stamping, I let my towels dry for at least 24 hours.
iron to set the paintThen I used heat from an iron to seal in the paint. (Tip: use a sheet between the tea towel and the iron.)

The tea towels are washable, I just recommend to wash on the gentle cycle to preserve the paint.  A super easy craft with endless possibilities of creativity.

They can make great gifts too– I’m thinking Christmas. 🙂

Have fun creating yours!
