DIY Nautical Frame

Simple DIY Anchor Art Tutorial

Hi all – I’m Melissa from A Prudent Life and I’m so excited to show you my newest creation. Along with the rest of the world, I’ve been on a serious nautical kick lately. I’ve got the boat shoes in my wardrobe and just finished a DIY rope anchor for my wall.

This project is extremely easy and inexpensive – which is my favorite combination. I started with a $1 plain frame from Michaels, some small craft sticks from the Dollar Tree, and leftover cork drawer liner.

I traced the frame onto the cork and cut it out with scissors and an Exacto knife. I used two types of glue to make sure the cork stayed on the frame. First, I used spray glue to get some instant adhesion. Then, I used Fast Grab craft glue because it is stronger than the spray glue long term.

I painted 4 of my craft sticks navy blue, and then cut them to fit diagonally in each corner of the frame. To cut them, I scored them with a knife and then they snapped apart cleanly. I attached them with super glue.

Six craft sticks received a coat of white paint. When they were dry, I started layering them around the interior opening of the frame.

Each layer was also attached with super glue.

I used six white craft sticks total, two rows vertical and one row horizontal. After I glued the top layer, I placed paint bottles on each corner to help set the glue.

When everything was dry, I printed an anchor clip art and added the frame to my new bookshelves!

I already had the cork and craft sticks on hand, so my only expense was the $1 frame! I’m sure I’ll be over the nautical trend at some point, so I loved adding a touch of it without spending a ton of money.
