Mother’s day is coming up soon and I am so excited to give my mom her gift! Since being laid off I do not have much money to spend on gifts… no fancy massage or dinner for my mom this year but I know she will appreciate the time and love I put into this DIY personalized tote bag much more!! I decided to make a tote because it is light, easy to fold up and ship plus my mom is going to Europe soon and I think she will love to have this tote with her. I can picture her talking to random strangers and showing them pictures of us on her bag 🙂
Materials: Tote Bag, Fabric paint or Fabric medium to mix with your acyrlic paints, Painters tape, wood tags, modge podge, clear finishing spray, Stamps or stencils and your pictures printed onto regular printer paper.
Step 1 – Print out your pictures sized for your wooden tags onto regular printer paper.
Step 2- Paint your wood tags black
Step 3- Paint on a thin layer of mod podge, add your picture and smooth it down
Step 4- Paint a thin layer of mod podge on top of the picture. Let dry. Repeat (2 top coats needed)
Step 5- Spray with finishing spray
Step 6- Mix Fabric medium with your paints to create fabric paint
Step 7- Lay down the painters tape in a pattern you like then paint on the stripes. Let Dry. Flip over and repeat on the other side
Step 8- Stamp or stencil a personalized message for your mom using the fabric paint. You will see I practiced a little on paper first to make sure I got it!
Step 9 – Attach the tags to the tote using string. I used Embroidery thread by DMC and I tied knots onto each tab so that they lay spread out instead of stacked on top of each other when hanging from the tote handle.
** You will see that I added blue contrast paint inside the hole. It was easy… just use a q-tip or paint brush and work it around.
Annnnnnnd DONE! What do you think?! I hope she loves it. She is supposed to be getting it in the mail today actually so we will see if she gets the gift first or sees this post 🙂
Meanwhile I was trying my best to keep Scarlett occupied on this VERY hot day in San Diego. She was finger painting and running through the sprinkler, so fun! See how guilty she is looking on the right? Yeah.. that is because she has a huge rock in her mouth I realized soon after taking this picture… sheesh.
