DIY Melted Crayon ‘Love’ Art

DIY Melted Crayon 'Love' Art
I am in LOVE with melted crayon art! It is seriously the most brilliant medium I’ve ever worked with! Give it a shot – I’m willing to bet you’ll be as amazed as I was at how easy  and incredible making some melted crayon art can be with a few tips.

To start, you’ll need the following:

  • Crayons**
  • Canvas
  • Chip Board or Thin Cardboard
  • Glue Gun
  • Heat Tool or Hair Dryer
  • Printer Paper

** Your best bet is an analogous color scheme, or a set of colors next to each other on the color wheel. For example: red, orange, yellow or red, purple, blue.

First, start by hot gluing your crayons to your chipboard in the order you’d like them to melt. I cut my crayons in thirds and spaced them about a centimeter apart. I find this saved a lot of crayon and minimized waste.  This is also a plus because you can use the crayons for 2 or even 3 other pieces of artwork depending on the canvas size you use. When you glue your crayons down be sure to hold each one down for a couple seconds so the glue and crayon wax have a chance to cool and grip the cardboard.

Now, prop your canvas upright and hold your crayons over your canvas and start heating them up! The biggest tip while doing this is when the crayon is melting follow the drip all the way down with your heat tool so that the wax doesn’t clump halfway down your canvas. You can also use the heat tool (and especially your hair dryer) to mix and blend the colors which has a really lovely effect.

One thing I learned during this is that vinyl is a terrible, terrible idea for this project. When it gets hit by those hot temps it curls and shrinks and just turns your project into a mess! So I recommend doing your lettering and such afterwards.

What I did was hand cut a heart shape and then mirrored some text in word, printed  and cut it out and then used a spray adhesive to adhere it to the wax.
