DIY Leaf Art

Hello My Crafty Spot Readers! I’m Erin, from The Blue Eyed Dove and I’m so excited to be here sharing some of my latest DIY crafts with you.

DIY Leaf Art

I was inspired for today’s craft while out browsing garage sales on Labor Day weekend. I found this big box full of old, blank wooden plaques.  I’m not really sure why one would need so many wooden plaques to begin with {unless they are in the trophy business of course}, but I wasn’t complaining because I saw potential in one of the neglected plaques. And it was only a quarter. Sold!

I decided the plaque would be perfect to display some leaf art for Fall. You could use any type of leaf for this project, but I chose a Maple Leaf because I liked the shape of it, and it fit perfectly on this plaque.

Here’s what I used to update this old wooden plaque for an easy DIY leaf art project:

  • Leaf
  • White, Gold and Navy Spray Paint
  • 1 inch Frog Tape
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Mod Podge

Directions:

1. Spray paint the plaque white and allow to dry.

2. Add the frog tape to create two stripes of gold on the plaque. I measured the plaque to make sure the stripes would be even overall – the stripes were about 2 inches wide. Then I covered the top and bottom of the plaque to keep the gold paint off the white coat.

3. Use your gold spray paint to add the stripes and let dry.

4. Spray paint the leaf and dry. {Note: if the leaf starts to curl once dry place in a book to flatten it out}

5. Use hot glue to attach the leaf to the center of the plaque.

6. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge onto the leaf to give it a glossy seal.

I’m kinda obsessed with the look of spray paint, but any other paint would probably work just as well for a project like this.

It was so easy to update the look of this plaque for Fall.

And I love putting life back into someone else’s neglected junk 🙂

It was great to be here today! Can’t wait to be back next month.

  2. I love this! So much fall decor is kinda of country in style, and my house is not. I like that this is a more contemporary take on fall decorating. Well done!

    • Thanks, Kelly! I know what you mean about the country style. I like it, but it doesn’t really go in my home either…so I have to get creative 🙂
